The Making of Blythswood

Talk by Graeme Smith, author and publisher

June 2 @ 1:00 pm

In the comfort of the Willow Tearooms’ former Billiard Room, 217 Sauchiehall Street, enjoy Graeme Smith illustrating the making of the city’s ‘New Town of Blythswood’ in the early 1800s, splendid new streets west of a very new Buchanan Street, covering Blythswood Hill and building on Sauchiehall Street including the site of the Willow Tearooms. The prime developer was cotton weaver William Harley and his wife Jane Laird. They created many things to benefit fellow citizens. William Harley devised the first Hygienic Dairy in Europe, his principles still being followed today. At Willowbank they opened a tearoom overlooking the ornamental lakes and pagoda bridges in their pleasure gardens, open to the public, just west of Blythswood Square, about to be built. https://www.blythswoodsmith.co.uk/
