SUMMARY:‘Gang Warily’: the Royal Scottish Automobile Club’s Unique Place in British Motoring History
DESCRIPTION:Kimpton Blythswood Square Hotel \n\n\n\nEngineering historian\, Dr Nina Baker\, will bring us stories from the foundation of Scotland’s premier club for motorists\, to its work in two world wars and beyond. The beautiful building occupying the eastern side of Blythswood Square\, now the Kimpton Blythswood Square Hotel\, was the scene for many remarkable episodes in British motoring history\, of which perhaps its location as the UK’s starting point for the Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo is the best known today. Although the club motto of ‘Gang Warily’ was good advice given the state of Scotland’s roads in much of the club’s existence\, the club itself made plenty of adventurous advances\, not without risks attached. We will  hear of the club’s women members and the uniquely supportive role that the RSAC played in their support. \n\n\n\nBy happy coincidence\, 2026 is the Centenary Year of the official opening of the extended and restyled clubhouse of the Royal Scottish Automobile Club\, architect James Miller.  The most luxurious clubhouse in Scotland\, with membership open to ladies and gentlemen. \n\n\n\nPresented in the  Kimpton Blythswood Square Hotel’s Monte Carlo Room facing Blythswood Square gardens. \n\n\n\nRefreshments available at the historic Rally Bar adjacent. With full cabinet displays of RSAC\, motoring memorabilia\, and car rallying photographs. \n\n\n\nFree entry: reserve a place.

SUMMARY:‘Clubbable Sisters’: a history of women’s motoring societies
DESCRIPTION:Kimpton Blythswood Square Hotel \n\n\n\nThere was a time when there were no driving schools to teach anyone to drive\, no garages to get a car repaired and no associations devoted to motorists’ interests\, whether male or female. \n\n\n\nEngineering historian\, Dr Nina Baker\, will talk about women’s very active involvement in the early days of motoring (not least in Scotland\, including the first female car designer in the UK) and the societies which they set up for themselves both in this country and abroad. Clubs which did not admit women will be ‘named and shamed’ and the few which did will get honourable mentions. It will become clear when\, where and why some clubs were very aristocratic and others not so much. Dr Baker will conclude with a swift round up of some of the women’s motoring clubs active today.
