Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow, 232-242 St Vincent Street
Niall Murphy, Director of Glasgow City Heritage Trust, explores the career and buildings of one of Glasgow’s famed architects, including the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
Sir John James Burnet’s talent was as great as Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson and Charles Rennie Mackintosh, while his career was even more stellar in its achievements. The first Scot to receive a Gold Medal from the Royal Institute of British Architecture for a lifetime in architecture. (Jack Coia was the second.) Yet today Sir JJ Burnet is little known, perhaps the most mysterious of the great Glasgow architects. Has Burnet’s ability as stylistic chameleon contributed to this overshadowing?
The talk will take place in Burnet’s magnificent College Hall.
Drinks will be served in the Hall before the talk.
Attendance is free, although a suggested donation between £5- £15 is welcome.
Doors open from 6.30pm
